Alexanderos is a cult DJ, producer, and exponent of Eros philosophy in its wider sense of 'life force' as well as the erotic. Born 15 August 1969 in Omalos, Crete, Greece, as a young man he began a DJ journey that took him from his home island to Ibiza seasons and Manchester clubs, before dissipating curiously in the early 2000s. Career revival began with a series of lockdown livestreams from his Kissamos home. Following relocation to London in 2022, there’s been a few original releases, guest spots on Soho and Voices Radio, a mix for NTS, club appearances, a We Out Here set for Brawnswood and afterparties for none other than Chaka Khan and Grace Jones. This year has seen him work to refine his vision of Pan-Mediterranean unity through sound and dance. Musically, that’s a broad enough church to take in Italo, deep soul, flamenco, dreamy disco and steamy house, Raï, Kritika, Anatolian psychedelia, Athenian electronica, Palestinian folk and sunset-time Balearic business of the kind Jose Padilla was famed for. Alexanderos has been a recurring feature at Basket of Light festival. In its latest edition he invited people into a tent for his ‘Calathus Mysteria’. Banking on having underestimated people’s capacity for weirdness, this presented a philosophical, political and musical agenda over a dozen songs and a 40-slide powerpoint. So things can get a little unusual, but the music holds its fundamental allure. Whether warming up or throwing down the hottest peak time disco, on a good night Alexanderos feels like the cosmos’s best-kept DJ secret.
