BADBADNOTGOOD is a Canadian instrumental band and production collective from Toronto, formed in 2010. The group is known for blending jazz musicianship with hip-hop production aesthetics, creating a distinctive sound that bridges jazz, alternative, and experimental music scenes. Originally founded by bassist Chester Hansen, drummer Alexander Sowinski, and keyboardist Matthew Tavares while studying in the Humber College jazz program, the band later expanded to include multi-instrumentalist Leland Whitty. BADBADNOTGOOD first gained attention through jazz-influenced covers of hip-hop tracks and quickly built a reputation for innovative instrumental compositions and collaborations with artists such as Tyler, The Creator, Kendrick Lamar, Daniel Caesar, and Ghostface Killah. Over time, the group evolved from a jazz trio into a widely respected experimental ensemble, releasing several acclaimed albums including III (2014), IV (2016), Talk Memory (2021), and Mid Spiral (2024). Their work often merges improvisational jazz with hip-hop rhythms, electronic textures, and cinematic arrangements, earning them Grammy recognition for their production work.:
