Bio
Bleak Squad is an Australian supergroup formed in 2025 in Melbourne, Victoria. The band features vocalist/guitarist Adalita (Magic Dirt), multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey (The Birthday Party, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey), guitarist Mick Turner (Dirty Three, Mess Esque), and drummer/producer Marty Brown (Art of Fighting). The project began as informal jams initiated by Brown around 2019, later solidified into a band named by Adalita. Recording sessions emphasized spontaneity, often using first or second takes at Head Gap Studio and Standalone Studios with engineer Rohan Sforcina. Their debut album, Strange Love, was released on 22 August 2025 via Poison City Records. It includes singles “Lost My Head,” “Strange Love,” and “Blue Signs.” Critics praised the record for its cohesion, immersive textures, and interplay of dual vocals between Adalita and Harvey, describing it as sounding more like a seasoned band’s fourth record than a debut. The band quickly embarked on shows in Queenscliff and Meeniyan (Aug 2025), followed by headline concerts at Sydney’s City Recital Hall (Oct 11) and Melbourne Recital Centre (Oct 16). They were also booked for Tasmania’s Unconformity Festival. Strange Love entered the ARIA Top 50 Albums Chart.
