Cold is an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1986. The group was founded by vocalist Scooter Ward, guitarist Matt Loughran, bassist Jeremy Marshall, and drummer Sam McCandless. Originally performing under the name Grundig, the band later adopted the name Cold before releasing their first major recordings. Cold gained attention in the late 1990s when they signed with A&M Records and released their self-titled debut album Cold in 1998. Their music blended elements of post-grunge, alternative metal, and hard rock, characterized by heavy guitar riffs and emotionally driven lyrics. The band achieved wider success with their second album 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage (2000), which produced popular tracks such as “Just Got Wicked” and “End of the World.” Their biggest commercial breakthrough came with the third album Year of the Spider (2003). The record debuted in the top 5 of the Billboard 200 and included the hit singles “Stupid Girl” and “Suffocate.” After releasing A Different Kind of Pain in 2005, the band went on hiatus due to lineup changes and label issues. Cold reunited in 2009 and resumed touring and recording. In 2019 they released their sixth studio album, The Things We Can't Stop, marking their return after more than a decade without a new record. Over the years, Cold has built a loyal fan base through their blend of melodic songwriting, introspective themes, and heavy alternative rock sound.
