Cold Years is a Scottish alternative rock band from Aberdeen, formed in 2014 by vocalist and guitarist Ross Gordon. The current lineup also includes Finlay Urquhart (guitar), Louis Craighead (bass), and Jimmy Taylor (drums). Emerging from Scotland's vibrant rock scene, the band has earned acclaim for its emotionally charged songwriting, anthemic choruses, and energetic live performances. Initially conceived as a personal project by Ross Gordon, Cold Years quickly evolved into a full band. Their early EPs—Mile Marker (2015), Death Chasers (2016), and Northern Blue (2018)—established their blend of heartfelt lyricism and melodic punk-influenced rock. Their breakthrough came with the debut album Paradise (2020), which explored life in their hometown of Aberdeen through themes of hope, struggle, and resilience. The album was praised for combining emotionally honest lyrics with soaring, singalong choruses. In 2022, the band released their second album, Goodbye to Misery, broadening their sound while maintaining the melodic intensity that had become their trademark. In 2024, they followed it with A Different Life, recorded in New Jersey with producer Brett Romnes (known for his work with Hot Mulligan, Boston Manor, and The Movielife). The album marked another step forward in their songwriting and production, earning praise from fans and critics alike. Cold Years draw inspiration from American heartland rock, punk, and alternative music, often drawing comparisons to bands such as The Gaslight Anthem, Spanish Love Songs, and Brian Fallon. Their songs balance driving guitars with introspective lyrics about mental health, perseverance, community, and personal growth.
