Cowboy Junkies are a Canadian alternative folk-rock band renowned for their atmospheric sound, intimate vocals and slow-burn, emotionally rich songwriting. Formed in Toronto in the mid-1980s, the group—Margo Timmins (vocals), Michael Timmins (guitar/songwriting), Peter Timmins (drums) and Alan Anton (bass)—rose to prominence with their landmark 1988 album The Trinity Session, recorded live with a single microphone. Its spare, haunting reinterpretation of “Sweet Jane” remains one of the band’s most iconic performances. Over the decades, Cowboy Junkies have cultivated a dedicated global following with albums that move between folk, blues, country, rock, and slowcore, always centred around Margo’s distinctive, understated voice and the band’s reflective, cinematic style. Their music is known for its quiet power—stories told in whispers, shadows and space—exploring themes of memory, longing, resilience, and the beauty found in stillness. A cornerstone act in modern alt-folk, Cowboy Junkies continue to release new music and tour internationally, maintaining a reputation for shows that are warm, evocative and deeply immersive.
