Dappled Cities are a long‑standing indie rock band from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia formed in 1997 when members were still teenagers. Originally called Periwinkle and later Dappled Cities Fly, they evolved into a five‑piece group known for their melodic, artful blend of indie rock, indie pop, art rock and dream pop with richly layered guitars, keyboards and dynamic song structures. Over more than two decades, Dappled Cities have released multiple acclaimed albums — beginning with A Smile (2004), which gained early attention on Triple J and community radio, followed by Granddance (2006), Zounds (2009), Lake Air (2012) and Five (2017). Their sound combines textured guitar work, thoughtful melodies and often experimental arrangements, and they’ve toured extensively in Australia and internationally, including appearances at festivals like South by Southwest. The core songwriting and vocals are shared by founding members Dave Rennick and Tim Derricourt, with keyboards, bass and drums adding depth to their evolving indie pop/rock palette. Known for artistic growth and resilience in the Australian music scene, Dappled Cities continue to release new music and perform live, cementing their place as enduring figures in Aussie indie music.
