avid J (born David John Haskins on 24 April 1957) is a British musician, songwriter, producer, writer, and composer best known as the bassist and a founding member of the pioneering gothic rock band Bauhaus and the alternative rock band Love and Rockets. Widely regarded as one of the architects of post-punk and gothic rock, he has also maintained a prolific solo career spanning more than four decades. Born in Northampton, England, David J co-founded Bauhaus in 1978 alongside Peter Murphy, Daniel Ash, and his younger brother Kevin Haskins. The band's debut single, "Bela Lugosi's Dead," became one of the defining recordings of the gothic rock movement, with David J writing its lyrics as well as those for several other Bauhaus classics. His melodic bass playing, poetic lyricism, and experimental approach helped shape the band's influential sound. After Bauhaus initially disbanded in 1983, David J launched a solo career, releasing albums such as Etiquette of Violence, Crocodile Tears and the Velvet Cosh, and Songs from Another Season. His 1990 single "I'll Be Your Chauffeur" became one of the earliest No. 1 songs on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart, establishing him as a successful solo artist in addition to his band work. In 1985, David J reunited with Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins to form Love and Rockets, one of the most successful alternative rock bands of the late 1980s. Alongside his work in music, he has composed scores for films and theatre, written and directed stage productions, published the memoir Who Killed Mister Moonlight? about the history of Bauhaus, and exhibited his visual artwork internationally. He has also worked as a producer, composer, and occasional actor.
