David Rawlings is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer best known for his long-standing musical partnership with Americana artist Gillian Welch. Though often associated with Welch’s recordings and performances, Rawlings is widely celebrated in his own right for his distinctive fingerpicking guitar style and roots-focused songwriting. Raised in Rhode Island and later based in Nashville, Rawlings emerged in the 1990s as a key figure in the modern Americana and folk revival. His intricate acoustic guitar work and close vocal harmonies became a defining element of Welch’s albums, including Revival (1996) and Time (The Revelator) (2001). As a bandleader, he performs with the Dave Rawlings Machine, releasing acclaimed records such as A Friend of a Friend and Poor David’s Almanack, which showcase his blend of folk, bluegrass, old-time and country influences. In addition to performing, Rawlings is a respected producer and engineer, working with artists across the Americana and indie folk spectrum.
