David Tao (陶喆), born 11 July 1969 in Hong Kong, is a Taiwanese-American singer-songwriter and producer widely credited with pioneering the integration of R&B into Mandarin pop music. Raised between Hong Kong, Taipei, and the United States, he studied psychology at UCLA before beginning work as a producer and songwriter for other artists. In 1997 he released his self-titled debut album, which established him as a fresh voice in Mandopop. His follow-up albums I’m OK (1999), Black Tangerine (2002), The Great Leap (2005), and Beautiful (2006) blended R&B, rock, and pop influences, often exploring themes of love, identity, and social commentary. Tao’s collaboration with Jolin Tsai on Marry Me Today became one of Mandopop’s biggest duets, winning widespread acclaim. Later albums like Opus 69 (2009) and Hello Goodbye (2013) continued his experimental style, while his recent projects reaffirm his relevance in the modern scene. Over his career, Tao has won six Golden Melody Awards, including recognition for songwriting and production, cementing his status as one of Taiwan’s most influential musicians.
