Fantastic Negrito (born Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz on January 20 1968) is an American singer‑songwriter and multi‑instrumentalist known for his genre‑spanning blend of blues, R\&B, rock, funk and roots music. After early struggles in the music industry and a near‑fatal car crash in 1999 that left him in a coma, Dphrepaulezz re‑emerged in 2014 under the name Fantastic Negrito with a distinctive, raw style he calls *“black roots music for everyone.”* His breakthrough came in 2015 when he won the inaugural NPR Tiny Desk Contest, which helped launch a global career defined by fierce storytelling and electrifying performances. He has since earned three Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Blues Album — for *The Last Days of Oakland* (2016), *Please Don’t Be Dead* (2019), and *Have You Lost Your Mind Yet?* (2021) — and released the 2024 album *Son of a Broken Man*. Fantastic Negrito’s music blends gritty blues energy with soul, funk grooves and rock intensity, marked by powerful vocals, expressive guitar work and socially conscious songwriting. He has performed at major festivals such as Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Newport Folk and WOMADelaide in Australia, and routinely tours internationally with his dynamic live band.
