Fred Leone is a Butchulla Songman, rapper, and multidisciplinary artist from Queensland, Australia. With ancestry connected to the Garrwa and Butchulla peoples, as well as South Sea Islander heritage, Leone is one of the few remaining custodians of traditional Butchulla songs and language. His work bridges ancient storytelling with modern soundscapes, blending traditional instruments such as the didgeridoo (kuluru) and boomerangs (bargan) with elements of hip hop, electronic, and experimental production. A founding member of the Indigenous hip hop group Impossible Odds, Fred Leone has performed on major stages across Australia and internationally, including the Sydney Opera House and WOMADelaide. In 2023, he released his debut solo single Yirimi Gundir, sung in Butchulla language, marking a new chapter in preserving and celebrating First Nations culture through contemporary music. Leone continues to collaborate with artists such as Birdz and advocate for cultural revitalization through his label and collective, Impossible Odds Records.
