Gillian Welch is an acclaimed American singer-songwriter known for her deeply traditional approach to folk, Americana and bluegrass music. Born in New York and later based in Nashville, she rose to prominence in the mid-1990s alongside musical partner and guitarist David Rawlings, with whom she has maintained a long-standing creative collaboration. Welch’s music is characterised by sparse acoustic arrangements, close vocal harmonies and evocative storytelling that draws heavily on Appalachian folk traditions, country blues and old-time music. Her 1996 debut album Revival earned a Grammy nomination and established her as a leading figure in the Americana revival, followed by highly regarded releases such as Time (The Revelator) and The Harrow & The Harvest. Beyond her solo catalogue, Welch gained wider recognition for contributing songs to the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, which helped spark renewed mainstream interest in roots and traditional American music.
