Gregory Porter is an American jazz and soul singer-songwriter celebrated for his warm baritone voice, rich storytelling, and signature flat cap. Born on November 4, 1971 in Sacramento, California, and raised in Bakersfield, Porter grew up immersed in gospel and soul music through his mother’s church influence. Initially pursuing a career in football on scholarship at San Diego State University, a shoulder injury redirected his path toward music. He began performing in New York’s jazz circuit in the 2000s, releasing his debut album Water in 2010 to critical acclaim. His 2013 album Liquid Spirit marked his international breakthrough, earning the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2014. He later won another Grammy for Take Me to the Alley (2017), cementing his status as one of the most influential modern jazz vocalists. Porter’s repertoire seamlessly bridges jazz, soul, gospel, and blues, often reflecting themes of faith, love, and social commentary. His 2017 album Nat King Cole & Me paid homage to one of his key inspirations, while All Rise (2020) showcased original compositions and lush arrangements. In 2023, he released Christmas Wish, blending classic and contemporary holiday songs. Beyond music, Porter is also a broadcaster, podcast host, and television personality, known for his podcast The Hang and cooking series The PorterHouse. His stage presence and authenticity have earned him global recognition, leading to sold-out tours, appearances at the Royal Albert Hall, North Sea Jazz Festival, and Montreux Jazz Festival.
