Sergio Giavanni Kitchens — professionally known as Gunna — was born on June 14, 1993 in College Park, Georgia, where the Atlanta rap landscape would later shape both his sound and his trajectory. Growing up surrounded by the cultural influence of Southern hip‑hop, he started writing and recording music as a teenager, gaining local recognition before formally stepping into the national scene. His relationship with Young Thug became a pivotal turning point. Introduced through mutual circles, Gunna appeared on Thug’s 2016 track “Floyd Mayweather” alongside Travis Scott and Gucci Mane — an early placement that brought him his first major exposure. That same year he signed to Young Stoner Life (YSL) Records and released the first entry in his Drip Season mixtape series. Drip Season 2 (2017) widened his audience, but it was Drip Season 3 (2018) — featuring Lil Durk, Nav, Metro Boomin, Hoodrich Pablo Juan and more — that marked his breakthrough moment. Later in 2018 he teamed with Lil Baby for the single “Drip Too Hard,” which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped launch their joint mixtape Drip Harder into commercial success. Gunna’s debut studio album Drip or Drown 2 arrived in 2019 and debuted in the top 5 of the Billboard 200, followed by Wunna (2020), which opened at No. 1 and cemented his position as a defining voice of the melodic trap era. In January 2022 he released DS4EVER, featuring Drake, Future, 21 Savage, Lil Baby and Kodak Black — a commercial and cultural continuation of the “Drip” legacy. Months later, in May 2022, Gunna and Young Thug were among 28 defendants named in a RICO indictment involving alleged YSL gang affiliation. Gunna voluntarily surrendered and in December 2022 entered an Alford plea — maintaining innocence while accepting a conviction — leading to his same‑day release after being sentenced to five years with time served. Five months after release he issued “Bread & Butter,” directly addressing the case through his music. On his 30th birthday in June 2023 he released A Gift & A Curse, followed by the 2024 album ONE OF WUN, supported by a headline U.S. tour. Parallel to his recording career, Gunna has been noted for his cultural presence — particularly his fashion influence, frequent high‑profile collaborations, and GQ‑profiled jewelry ethos. Beyond music, he has participated in philanthropic initiatives: in 2022 he partnered with Goodr to open a free grocery store at Ronald E. McNair Middle School, the school he attended, offering food and supplies to students and families. Stylistically, Gunna is associated with melodic trap — smooth vocal delivery, atmospheric production, and fluid hooks — often pairing introspective lyrics with polished, hypnotic flows. His catalog, collaborative network and chart history have positioned him not just as a product of Atlanta’s creative network but as one of the contemporary figures pushing melodic Southern rap onto the global stage.
