Hiromi Uehara, known professionally as Hiromi, is a Japanese jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader renowned for her virtuosic technique, electrifying live energy, and genre-defying compositions that merge jazz, classical, rock, and fusion. Born on March 26, 1979, in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, she began piano lessons at age six and gave her first concert with an orchestra by fourteen, performing with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Hiromi’s life changed at 17 when she met Chick Corea, who invited her to perform with him in Tokyo the following day — a pivotal moment that set her on a global path. After graduating from high school, she attended Berklee College of Music in Boston on scholarship, where she studied composition and performance. Under the mentorship of pianist Ahmad Jamal, she signed to Telarc Records, releasing her debut album Another Mind (2003) to widespread acclaim — earning Japan’s gold certification and the Recording Industry Association of Japan’s Best Jazz Album of the Year award. From the beginning, Hiromi displayed a rare balance of technical mastery and emotional storytelling. Her performances are known for their physical dynamism — leaping between piano and synthesizers, blending virtuosic runs with sudden mood shifts and rhythmic surprises. Her ability to combine classical harmony with jazz improvisation has made her one of the most influential contemporary pianists of her generation.
