Incantationis an American death metal band formed in 1989 in New Jersey by guitarist John McEntee and drummer/vocalist Paul Ledney. They are widely regarded as one of the foundational acts of the early New York death metal scene alongside bands like Suffocation, Mortician, and Immolation. Their sound is known for its extreme heaviness, down-tuned guitars, slow-to-blasting tempo shifts, and dark atmosphere, often blending death metal, death-doom, and blackened elements into a dense, cavernous style. Lyrically, Incantation often explores themes of anti-religion, occultism, blasphemy, and darkness, contributing to their reputation as one of the more uncompromising bands in extreme metal. Over their long career, they have released multiple influential albums such as *Onward to Golgotha* (1992) and *Mortal Throne of Nazarene* (1994), which helped define the sound of early 90s underground death metal.
