J.D. Fortune (born Jason Dean Bennison on September 1, 1973 in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and rock vocalist. He adopted his mother’s maiden name “Fortune” for his stage identity. Raised partly in Salt Springs, Nova Scotia, he dropped out of school to pursue performance and music. Before his breakthrough, he held various jobs including as an Elvis impersonator, martial arts instructor, and even worked as a truck driver. His major break came in 2005, when he competed in and won the reality TV series Rock Star: INXS, which selected a new lead singer for the Australian rock band INXS to succeed the late Michael Hutchence. As frontman, he recorded the INXS album Switch (2005), which was the band’s first with new material following Hutchence’s death. The single “Pretty Vegas,” co-written by Fortune and INXS’s Andrew Farriss, became one of the more commercially successful tracks from that era. Fortune continued performing with INXS for several years, touring internationally and contributing to their legacy, but in August 2011 he parted ways with the band reportedly due to creative differences and personal issues. After leaving INXS, Fortune pursued solo projects. One of his initiatives was the “Seven in 7” project (writing and releasing a new song each day for a week) in both 2014 (Los Angeles) and 2015 (Ontario). He also formed a band called Fortune, playing a show at The Stone Pony in New Jersey in July 2012. Over time, Fortune has remained active in music, releasing new material, performing, and engaging with fans via his own website.
