John Maus is an American singer, songwriter, and composer known for his intense, emotionally charged style of synth-pop, experimental pop, and post-punk–influenced music. He is recognized for his dramatic baritone vocals, heavy use of vintage synthesizers, and a lo-fi, retro-futuristic sound that often draws comparisons to 1980s goth and early electronic music. He studied music at the California Institute of the Arts and later earned a PhD in political science, also working as an academic in philosophy and political theory. His music often blends philosophical and existential themes with minimalist, nostalgic electronic production.
