Mad Professor (born Neil Joseph Stephen Fraser on 27 March 1955 in Georgetown, Guyana) is a highly influential British dub reggae producer, engineer, and remixer known for helping shape the second generation of dub music. He moved to London as a teenager and built his own recording equipment and studio, Ariwa Sounds, in 1979 — launching a prolific career that spans decades. He gained early recognition with his “Dub Me Crazy” series, which played a major role in bringing dub into the digital age in the 1980s, marked by heavy echo, deep bass, and experimental echo effects. Mad Professor has worked with a wide range of reggae artists and beyond. He has produced or remixed music for reggae legends like Lee “Scratch” Perry as well as artists outside the genre, including Massive Attack, Sade, and The Orb. Mad Professor has toured internationally (including Australia) and remains a key figure in dub culture with live dub shows and continued releases.
