Simões moved from Lisbon to London at age 18 and bought her first guitar with her first paycheck from a job at Whole Foods. Having never previously played music, she taught herself guitar by learning songs from the Midwest emo scene, later adding drums and bass to her repertoire. After a short stint in a band, she decided to pursue a solo project and created the Maripool moniker. Maripool's music combines jangly indie-pop guitars, 1990s shoegaze textures, and confessional songwriting. Her debut single "Blindness" (2021) earned attention from outlets including DIY, So Young, and Pitchfork. She followed with the EP It All Comes At Once (2022) and later a day that feels like nothing at all (2024), which expanded her sound into dreamier and more atmospheric territory. She is known for her strong DIY approach, often designing her own artwork, directing her own videos, and playing most of the instruments on her recordings.
