Marisa Anderson is an American guitarist and composer based in Portland, Oregon, widely respected for her expressive solo guitar work and genre-blending instrumental music. Her style is rooted in the American primitive guitar tradition while incorporating folk, blues, jazz, minimalism, and experimental influences into largely improvised compositions. Born in Northern California, Anderson began playing guitar at age ten and later developed a distinctive voice shaped by global folk traditions and years of travel across the United States and Mexico before settling in Portland. Since 2006, she has released numerous solo albums and collaborated with artists such as Jim White, William Tyler, and Tashi Dorji, in addition to composing for film and performing at international festivals. Critics have praised her as one of the most distinctive guitarists of her generation, noting her fluid, emotional playing and ability to re-imagine the landscape of American music through improvisation and hybrid influences. In 2026, Anderson embarked on her first solo Australian tour, further expanding her global presence and audience.
