Matt Hsu’s Obscure Orchestra is a Brisbane/Meanjin‑based music project led by Taiwanese‑Australian composer and multi‑instrumentalist Matt Hsu. What began in 2016 as Hsu’s solo experimental music venture has grown into a celebrated inclusive ensemble featuring 20+ musicians from diverse backgrounds, including hip‑hop artists, jazz and classical players, and multidisciplinary performers. Matt Hsu combines an extraordinary array of instruments (trumpet, accordion, clarinet, mbira and more) with found objects and world music influences to create richly textured, genre‑defying compositions blending experimental, indie, hip‑hop and orchestral elements. He and the Obscure Orchestra have won multiple Queensland Music Awards and have performed at major Australian events and festivals, using their music to champion inclusivity, cultural diversity, and social themes.
