Merpire is the musical project of Rhiannon Atkinson‑Howatt, a singer‑songwriter and guitarist based in Melbourne, Australia. Emerging on the independent music scene in 2017, she has crafted a distinctive sound that blends alternative rock, indie pop, dream pop, and atmospheric elements, inviting listeners into vivid emotional landscapes with evocative lyrics and lush, genre‑bending production. Growing up in Sydney, Rhiannon began writing songs in high school and won the Telstra Road to Discovery competition in 2015, which included a trip to Nashville, Tennessee and a marketing arrangement with Mushroom Records — a key early milestone in her career. She independently released her debut EP *Endless Chatter* in 2018, followed by her acclaimed first album *Simulation Ride* in 2021, which received support from triple j, BBC Radio 1, NME, and NPR and showcased her ability to weave introspection and dreamlike soundscapes into memorable songwriting. In 2025, Merpire released her second studio album *Milk Pool*, a more expansive and confident work that explores themes of growth, vulnerability, and emotional transformation, blending dark pop and indie textures with her signature melodic touch. She’s also known for her captivating live performances and dynamic band shows, having toured nationally and shared stages with artists like Julia Jacklin, Angie McMahon, Pillow Queens, Spacey Jane, Magic Dirt, and Bombay Bicycle Club at festivals and venues across Australia.
