Merzbow is the long‑running experimental music project of Masami Akita, a Japanese musician, composer and noise pioneer born in Tokyo in 1956. He started the project in 1979, emerging as a key figure in the noise music scene and becoming one of the most influential and prolific artists in the genre, with hundreds of recordings released across independent labels worldwide. His work is grounded in harsh noise, feedback, tape manipulation and avant‑garde soundscapes, blending influences from Dada art, musique concrète, free jazz and industrial experimentation. Akita’s interests also extend beyond sound — he has written books and articles on art, culture and post‑modern topics, and his later work reflects engagement with issues such as animal rights and environmentalism. Merzbow’s performances and recordings remain central to experimental music culture and have played at festivals, venues and special events internationally.
