Midge Ure (James Ure, born October 10, 1953, Cambuslang, Scotland) is a Scottish singer, songwriter, musician, and producer. He first found success in the mid-1970s with the band Slik, which scored a UK #1 single “Forever and Ever.” Later, he joined Rich Kids and became a co-founder of Visage, contributing to the iconic track “Fade to Grey.” In 1979 he took over as frontman and guitarist of Ultravox, leading them through their most successful period with synth-pop classics such as Vienna, Hymn, and Dancing with Tears in My Eyes. Beyond his band work, Ure was pivotal in humanitarian projects: he co-wrote and produced the global charity single Do They Know It’s Christmas? with Bob Geldof in 1984, and co-organized the legendary Live Aid concerts in 1985 (and later Live 8 in 2005). As a solo artist, Ure achieved a UK #1 hit with If I Was (1985) from his album The Gift and released several albums including Answers to Nothing (1988), Pure (1991), Breathe (1996), Move Me (2000), Fragile (2014), and Orchestrated (2017). Recognized for both his musical and humanitarian contributions, he was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 2005. Ure continues to tour internationally and remains an influential figure in new wave and synth-pop.
