Mogwai are a Scottish band formed in Glasgow in 1995, known for their mostly instrumental, atmospheric rock music. They are considered one of the key pioneers of post-rock, building songs around long, evolving structures that often shift between quiet, melodic passages and intense, distorted climaxes. Their sound is heavily guitar-driven, with strong use of effects, repetition, and dynamic contrast. The band consists of Stuart Braithwaite, Dominic Aitchison, Martin Bulloch, and Barry Burns, with other musicians contributing in touring and past roles. Mogwai released their debut album Mogwai Young Team (1997), which helped establish them in the UK indie and alternative scene. Over time, they became known not only for studio albums but also for composing film and TV soundtracks, including work for Les Revenants and Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait. Their later albums, including As the Love Continues (2021), have reached major chart success in the UK, showing their continued influence decades into their career. Today, Mogwai are widely respected for creating emotional, cinematic instrumental music that bridges indie rock, experimental sound, and film-score-like composition.
