Mystery Jets are an English indie rock band formed in 2003 on Eel Pie Island. Emerging during the mid-2000s indie rock revival, they quickly gained a reputation for inventive songwriting, distinctive vocals, and energetic live performances, becoming one of the notable acts of the UK's indie scene. The band's original lineup consisted of vocalist and keyboardist Blaine Harrison, guitarist William Rees, bassist Kai Fish, drummer Kapil Trivedi, and Blaine's father, Henry Harrison, who played bass and later guitar. Their unusual family dynamic and upbringing on the secluded Thames island gave the band a distinctive identity in their early years. Mystery Jets attracted attention with early singles before releasing their debut album, Making Dens (2006). The record featured fan favorites such as You Can't Fool Me Dennis and established their blend of quirky indie rock, art pop, and psychedelic influences. Their second album, Twenty One (2008), broadened their audience with accessible songs including Young Love, a duet with Laura Marling, and Two Doors Down. Over the following decade, the band continued to evolve musically through albums such as Serotonin (2010), produced by Chris Thomas, Radlands (2012), inspired by American landscapes and culture, and Curve of the Earth (2016), which embraced a more atmospheric and psychedelic sound. Their 2020 album, A Billion Heartbeats, tackled social and political issues, reflecting a more outward-looking perspective while retaining their melodic indie style. Known for seamlessly mixing indie rock, indie pop, folk, psychedelia, and alternative rock, Mystery Jets have built a loyal following through constant musical reinvention rather than chasing commercial trends. Although lineup changes—including the departure of Kai Fish—have shaped the band's evolution, Blaine Harrison, William Rees, and Kapil Trivedi have remained at its creative core. Today, Mystery Jets are regarded as one of the enduring bands to emerge from Britain's 2000s indie rock movement, respected for their adventurous songwriting, heartfelt lyrics, and consistently engaging live performances.
