Opeth is a Swedish progressive metal band formed in Stockholm in 1990 by David Isberg, later fronted by long-time vocalist, guitarist, and principal songwriter Mikael Åkerfeldt. Renowned for seamlessly blending the brutality of death metal with the intricacy of progressive rock and folk influences, Opeth have become one of the most respected and genre-defying acts in modern heavy music. Their early albums — Orchid (1995), Morningrise (1996), and My Arms, Your Hearse (1998) — established their signature sound of dynamic contrasts: harsh growls balanced with melodic acoustic passages. The 2001 release Blackwater Park, produced by Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), is widely regarded as a masterpiece and cemented their international reputation. Through the 2000s, albums like Deliverance (2002), Damnation (2003), and Ghost Reveries (2005) showcased both technical virtuosity and emotional depth. In the 2010s, the band shifted toward a more classic progressive rock sound with Heritage (2011), Pale Communion (2014), and Sorceress (2016). Their 2019 release In Cauda Venenum was praised for its bilingual recording (Swedish and English versions) and conceptual richness. Opeth remain at the forefront of progressive music for their constant evolution and meticulous craftsmanship. Their live shows are celebrated for blending ferocity with finesse, making them icons of both metal and art rock circles.
