Pearl Jam is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990, emerging as one of the pioneers of the grunge movement alongside Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. The founding members are Eddie Vedder (vocals, guitar), Stone Gossard (guitar), Jeff Ament (bass), Mike McCready (lead guitar), and Dave Krusen (drums, later replaced by Matt Cameron). Their sound blends raw emotion, social consciousness, and anthemic rock energy. Their debut album, Ten (1991), became a defining record of the 1990s, selling over 13 million copies in the U.S. alone and featuring era-defining songs such as “Alive,” “Even Flow,” and “Jeremy.” They followed with Vs. (1993) and Vitalogy (1994), both of which topped charts worldwide and solidified their reputation for introspective, politically aware songwriting. Throughout their career, Pearl Jam has been known for championing artist rights—famously taking on Ticketmaster in the mid-1990s over concert pricing and distribution fairness. The band’s catalog spans twelve studio albums, including Yield (1998), Binaural (2000), Riot Act (2002), Backspacer (2009), Gigaton (2020), and their most recent release, Dark Matter (2024). The latter reaffirms their enduring vitality, recorded with producer Andrew Watt, and supported by their global Dark Matter World Tour (2024–2025). Pearl Jam’s live performances are legendary—each set unique, driven by spontaneity, fan engagement, and a deep catalog of over 200 songs. They’ve sold over 85 million records worldwide, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, and remain one of the most influential and enduring rock bands of their generation. Their activism extends beyond music: the band supports environmental causes, social justice campaigns, and voter initiatives through their nonprofit, the Vitalogy Foundation.
