Bio
Possessed is an American death metal band formed in the early 1980s in San Francisco, California. Widely credited as one of the pioneers of the death metal genre, the band’s debut album Seven Churches (1985) is often regarded as the first true death metal record. Combining the aggression of thrash with guttural vocals, dark lyrical themes, and blistering speed, Possessed helped define the sound and identity of extreme metal. Fronted by founding vocalist and bassist Jeff Becerra, Possessed’s early lineup also included guitarists Larry LaLonde, Mike Torrao, and drummer Mike Sus. Despite disbanding in the late 1980s, the band’s influence endured, shaping acts like Death, Morbid Angel, and Deicide. After reforming in 2007 under Becerra’s leadership, Possessed made a triumphant return with the critically acclaimed 2019 album Revelations of Oblivion, released via Nuclear Blast Records. Known for their intensity and legacy, Possessed continues to perform worldwide, celebrated as one of the most important and enduring names in the history of death metal.
