Refused is a Swedish hardcore punk band formed in 1991 in Umeå, Sweden. Known for their politically charged lyrics and boundary-pushing sound, they evolved from traditional hardcore into experimental punk with elements of jazz, electronic, and post-punk, most notably on their landmark 1998 album The Shape of Punk to Come. After disbanding that same year, they reunited in 2012 and released albums including Freedom (2015) and War Music (2019). Refused is celebrated as a pioneering force in punk and post-hardcore, influencing generations of bands worldwide, and were inducted into the Swedish Music Hall of Fame in 2024.
