David Ryan Adams (born November 5, 1974, Jacksonville, North Carolina) is an American singer-songwriter and producer known for bridging alt-country, Americana, folk-rock and alternative rock; he first emerged with the alt-country band Whiskeytown before going solo. His solo debut Heartbreaker (2000) drew critical acclaim, followed by Gold (2001) featuring “New York, New York.” He later formed touring/recording outfit The Cardinals, releasing Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights and Cardinology. Adams founded his PAX-AM studio/label and has released an extensive catalog, from Prisoner (2017) to a prolific run in 2020–2024 (e.g., Wednesdays, Big Colors, FM, Romeo & Juliet, Devolver, Nebraska), plus the song-for-song cover 1989 (2015). Recent digital releases on Apple Music include Heartbreaker (25th Anniversary Edition) (2025). He has received multiple GRAMMY nominations across Rock and Country categories (e.g., 2002 and 2015). In 2019, allegations of misconduct reported by major outlets disrupted planned releases and touring; he later resumed releasing music and performing.
