Screamfeeder are an Australian indie rock band formed in Brisbane, Queensland, in 1991. Emerging from the ashes of The Madmen, the founding lineup included Tim Steward (vocals, guitar), Kellie Lloyd (bass, vocals), and Tony Blades (drums). By 1995, Dean Shwereb had joined on drums, and later guitarist Darek Mudge became a member, helping shape the band’s layered sound. The band’s style blends guitar-driven indie pop hooks with alternative rock grit, drawing comparisons to underground American acts such as Hüsker Dü, while retaining a distinctly Australian melodic sensibility. Throughout the 1990s they supported international touring bands including Sonic Youth, Pavement, and Ride, cementing their reputation in the indie circuit. Screamfeeder’s discography includes highly regarded albums such as Burn Out Your Name (1993), Fill Yourself with Music (1995), and Kitten Licks (1996), the latter considered a landmark of Australian indie rock. Later works include Rocks on the Soul (2000), Take You Apart (2003), Pop Guilt (2017), and Five Rooms (2022). Their catalogue is known for balancing raw, fuzzed-out energy with melodic pop craftsmanship. In 2022, drummer Phil Usher replaced longtime member Shwereb, as the band continued into their fourth decade. A recent documentary, The Ending Goes Forever, chronicles their long career, capturing their resilience and enduring influence on the Australian music landscape. Screamfeeder remain active, touring, recording, and releasing reissues of their classic works.
