Bio
Secret Chiefs 3 is the long-running experimental music project led by composer and multi-instrumentalist Trey Spruance (founding member of Mr. Bungle). Known for their genre-defying and cinematic approach, Secret Chiefs 3 move fluidly between avant-garde rock, Middle Eastern modes, surf, metal, jazz, electronic composition and film-score atmospherics — often within the same performance. Formed in the mid-1990s, the project has evolved into a collective with multiple sub-ensembles, each exploring a different sonic universe. Their live shows are highly dynamic and theatrical, shifting from intense, precision-driven instrumental work to haunting, ritual-like passages and explosive rhythmic movement. Universally respected among experimental and progressive music communities, Secret Chiefs 3 occupy a unique space — bridging underground rock, contemporary composition, global traditional forms, and esoteric soundworlds.
