Silentjay is the project of Melbourne-based producer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Alejandro Jay Abapo. Emerging from Australia’s soulful underground scene, he built a following through early SoundCloud releases and independently issued EPs that blended live instrumentation with beat-driven electronic production. Classically trained in jazz improvisation at the Victorian College of the Arts, he plays saxophone, keys, drums and flute, later shifting toward production after being inspired by DJ culture and sampling. His music fuses hip-hop, soul, funk and footwork influences into instrumental beats and reimagined house textures shaped by a jazz sensibility. Beyond solo work, Silentjay has contributed to major Australian projects including performing backing vocals with Hiatus Kaiyote and collaborating with artists such as Sampa The Great, while his beat tapes and releases — including work with Jace XL — have gained international attention and touring opportunities. He has also appeared widely as a live act/DJ across Australian scenes, with listings dating back to 2012 and performances mainly centred around Melbourne and Sydney club circuits.
