Southern Sons are an iconic Australian rock band originally formed in 1989 in Melbourne, Victoria. They became one of the country’s most successful rock acts of the early 1990s, celebrated for melodic songs and polished musicianship that helped define Australian pop‑rock of that era. The band was formed when members of the Melbourne group The State teamed up with Irwin Thomas (then performing as Jack Jones) as lead vocalist and guitarist, alongside guitarist/vocalist Phil Buckle, bassist Geoff Cain, and drummer Virgil Donati. Southern Sons shot to national prominence with charting singles like “Heart in Danger”, “Hold Me in Your Arms”, and “You Were There”—all of which broke into the top 10 on the Australian charts. Their self‑titled 1990 debut album reached No. 5 on the ARIA Albums Chart, solidifying their place in Australian rock. Across three studio albums—Southern Sons (1990), Nothing But the Truth (1992), and Zone (1996)—the band blended pop rock and soft rock with strong vocal harmonies and accessible songwriting, earning radio support and a dedicated fanbase. They also worked alongside major Australian artists, including touring with John Farnham early in their career. After disbanding in 1996, members pursued solo projects and other collaborations, but Southern Sons reunited in 2019 and have since performed together again, including a 2026 Heart In Danger national tour celebrating their classic catalogue.
