Bio
Spirit Lights is an ambient electronic music project from Brisbane (Meanjin), Australia, created by Joshua MacGregor. It’s known for immersive, synthesiser‑driven soundscapes that blend modular synthesis, analogue textures, and sound collage, often drawing inspiration from artists like Jon Hopkins and James Holden, as well as electronic music pioneers such as Tangerine Dream. Joshua’s work as Spirit Lights focuses on long‑form, experimental compositions that evolve through layered synth arpeggios, drones, and hypnotic ambient structures, with occasional contributions from drummer Benjamin Shannon adding live, jazz‑influenced percussion to some pieces. Spirit Lights released a self‑titled album and companion works—including In Balance and Open Heart / Eyes Closed—exploring themes of meditation, chaos and balance, and reflecting a creative process rooted in improvisation and analogue gear experimentation.
