Split Enz were an influential New Zealand band formed in Auckland in the early 1970s by Tim Finn and Phil Judd. Known for their theatrical stage presence, eccentric fashion, and inventive songwriting, the group blended art rock, new wave, pop, and progressive influences to create one of Australasia’s most distinctive musical acts. Originally starting as the experimental folk-rock group Split Ends, the band evolved into a flamboyant art-rock outfit before shifting toward a more accessible new wave and pop sound after Neil Finn joined in 1977. Their breakthrough came with hits like I Got You, History Never Repeats, and Six Months in a Leaky Boat, helping them become one of the first New Zealand bands to gain major international recognition. Split Enz became celebrated for combining quirky creativity with strong melodic songwriting, influencing generations of alternative and pop-rock artists. Following their breakup in 1984, several members went on to successful projects including Crowded House.
