Sumac (stylised SUMAC) is a highly respected experimental metal trio formed in 2014 by acclaimed musicians Aaron Turner, Nick Yacyshyn and Brian Cook. Known for pushing the boundaries of heavy music, the band blends post‑metal, sludge and avant‑garde elements into dense, immersive soundscapes that oscillate between crushing heaviness and exploratory improvisation. Their work is characterised by deeply textured compositions, complex dynamics and emotional depth. Turner (guitar and vocals) came from influential acts such as Isis and Old Man Gloom, Yacyshyn (drums) from Baptists, and Cook (bass) from Russian Circles and Botch, giving Sumac a pedigree rooted in some of modern metal’s most adventurous scenes. Since their formation, Sumac has released several well‑regarded albums including The Deal (2015), What One Becomes (2016), Love in Shadow (2018), May You Be Held (2020), and The Healer (2024) and collaborated with artists like Japanese noise legend Keiji Haino and the experimental artist Moor Mother.
