The Herd are a much‑loved Australian hip‑hop group formed in Sydney in 2001 and known for being one of the country’s most influential and politically conscious hip‑hop acts. They helped define the Australian scene by combining rap, live instrumentation and socially‑aware lyrics, tackling topics such as anti‑racism, decolonisation, anti‑war issues and environmentalism in their music. Their early singles like “Scallops” earned national airplay on Triple J, and albums such as An Elefant Never Forgets (2003) and the critically acclaimed The Sun Never Sets (2005) solidified their impact the latter earning ARIA and J Award nominations and producing fan favourites like their iconic cover of Redgum’s “I Was Only 19.” The Herd’s lineup has blended MCs (e.g., Urthboy, Ozi Batla, Berzerkatron) with a full live band (including beats, guitars, accordion and more), giving them a unique live sound that bridged hip‑hop with organic performance energy. They also co‑founded Elefant Traks, one of Australia’s most respected independent labels, which helped nurture many other Australian hip‑hop artists before its closure in 2024. In 2026, The Herd are celebrating the *20th anniversary of The Sun Never Sets with a national tour, revisiting their influential catalogue and reconnecting with long‑time fans.
