The Long Ryders formed in 1981 during a period when several Los Angeles bands were reviving 1960s-inspired guitar rock. They became part of the Paisley Underground scene, which mixed psychedelic rock, folk rock, and jangly guitars with modern alternative rock energy. Their music also drew heavily from classic American country rock traditions, especially bands like the Byrds and early roots rock artists. While they never achieved huge mainstream commercial success, they became highly influential in shaping the emerging alternative country and Americana movements that would grow in the 1990s. After releasing several albums in the 1980s and building a cult following, the band disbanded for a period before later reuniting for tours and new recordings.
