The Tallis Scholars are a British vocal ensemble founded in 1973 by conductor Peter Phillips. Internationally recognized as one of the leading interpreters of Renaissance sacred polyphony, the group is admired for its clarity, purity of tone, and disciplined approach to a cappella performance. With a core lineup of ten singers, often performing two voices to a part, they have brought the music of composers such as Thomas Tallis, Josquin des Prez, William Byrd, and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina to global audiences. Over five decades, The Tallis Scholars have performed more than 2,200 concerts and released over 60 recordings, many on their own Gimell Records label, co-founded with Steve Smith. Their landmark recordings include Allegri’s Miserere and Josquin’s Missa Pange lingua, which won Gramophone’s Record of the Year. In recognition of their influence, the ensemble has been elected to the Gramophone Hall of Fame. The Tallis Scholars have appeared in prestigious venues worldwide, from London’s Wigmore Hall to the Sistine Chapel, and continue to tour extensively, presenting around 70 concerts annually. They also run Tallis Scholars Summer Schools to mentor young singers in Renaissance repertoire. In 2023 the ensemble celebrated its 50th anniversary with international tours and special projects, reaffirming their reputation as standard-bearers of early vocal music.
