The Wakes formed in Scotland in the early 2000s, emerging from the UK folk-punk and alternative rock circuit. From the beginning, they built their identity around socially conscious songwriting, often focusing on working-class life, politics, solidarity, and historical struggle. They developed a strong following through live performances in the UK and Europe, especially within folk-punk and activist music scenes, where their mix of traditional Celtic influences and punk energy fit naturally.
