Thundercat (real name Stephen Lee Bruner) is a Los Angeles–based bassist, singer, songwriter, and producer known for his virtuosic six-string bass playing and genre-blending sound. Born in 1984, he grew up in a musical family and began playing bass at a young age, eventually rising to prominence as a member of the crossover thrash band Suicidal Tendencies. He later established a successful solo career, fusing funk, jazz fusion, soul, progressive R\&B, and psychedelia into a distinctive style. Thundercat is closely associated with producer Flying Lotus and has contributed to major projects like To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar, earning a Grammy for his work on the track “These Walls.” His solo albums—including Drunk (2017) and It Is What It Is (2020)—have been critically acclaimed, with the latter winning a Grammy for Best Progressive R\&B Album. Known for his cosmic aesthetic, falsetto vocals, and technical bass skills, Thundercat is widely regarded as one of the most innovative modern bassists.
