Underground Lovers are an Australian indie rock band formed in Melbourne in 1988 by guitarist Glenn Bennie and vocalist Vincent Giarrusso. Known for blending guitar-driven rock with electronic textures and shoegaze influences, they became a cornerstone of Australia’s alternative scene in the early 1990s. Their self-titled debut album Underground Lovers (1991) earned them the 1992 ARIA Award for Best New Talent, showcasing a unique mix of melodic pop and experimental soundscapes. The follow-up, Leaves Me Blind (1992), is considered their masterpiece—an atmospheric fusion of shimmering guitars and synths that was later ranked among the 100 Best Australian Albums. Subsequent albums such as Dream It Down (1994), Rushall Station (1996), and Cold Feeling (1999) solidified their reputation for innovation and emotional depth. After a hiatus in the 2000s, the band reunited in 2009, releasing Weekend (2013), Staring at You Staring at Me (2017), and A Left Turn (2019). Their sound continues to balance cinematic textures, introspective lyrics, and hypnotic rhythms, earning them enduring critical acclaim and a loyal fan base across Australia’s live music scene.
