Virgin Orchestra is a Reykjavík-based trio formed in 2021 by Stefanía Pálsdóttir, Starri Holm, and Rún Árnadóttir, who met while studying at the Icelandic University of the Arts. The band has gained international attention for blending post-punk with classical music, electronic composition, dreampop, noise, and shoegaze influences. Originally emerging from electronic composition and experimental music backgrounds, the group developed a distinctive sound that combines guitar, bass, vocals, cello, drum machines, programming, and experimental soundscapes. Their classically trained cellist and electronic-music roots help set them apart from many contemporary post-punk bands. Their Berlin-recorded debut release, Fragments (2023), came out through Iceland's renowned Bad Taste/Smekkleysa label and helped establish them as one of Iceland's most exciting new alternative acts. They followed it with the EP Let It Burn (2025), earning praise from outlets including Rolling Stone UK and appearances at festivals such as Iceland Airwaves.
