Youth Group are an Australian indie rock band formed in Sydney in 1996. Known for their evocative lyrics, jangly guitars, and cinematic soundscapes, the band became one of the defining acts of Australia’s 2000s alternative music scene. The lineup features Toby Martin (vocals, guitar), Cameron Emerson-Elliott (guitar), Patrick Matthews (bass), and Danny Lee Allen (drums). The band gained international attention with their 2006 cover of Alphaville’s Forever Young, which became a No. 1 hit on the ARIA Singles Chart and won the ARIA Award for Breakthrough Artist – Single. The track, featured on the hit TV series The O.C., propelled their album Casino Twilight Dogs to critical and commercial success, showcasing their melodic songwriting and emotional resonance. Earlier works such as Skeleton Jar (2004) and Urban & Eastern (2001) established Youth Group as leaders of Australia’s early-2000s indie movement. Their music combines nostalgic storytelling with atmospheric production, earning comparisons to bands like Death Cab for Cutie and The Church. In 2025, marking 20 years since the recording of Forever Young, Youth Group signed to Impressed Recordings and announced their upcoming album Big Whoop, due 19 September 2025. The lead single The Joke revisits the band’s suburban storytelling roots while exploring new dance-rock and synth textures with longtime producer Wayne Connolly. They will embark on a national headline tour to celebrate the album’s release, marking a fresh era for one of Australia’s most enduring alternative bands.
