The Clams That Speak with Carmen Rojas and Karelis Zambrano
The Clams That Speak (Las almejas que hablan) is a dance-theatre piece created by Carmen Rojas and Karelis Zambrano, two performing artists who founded their own company in Madrid in 2023 with the aim of breaking down the barriers between artistic disciplines and forms of expression. Premiered in 2024, the production was both a finalist and award winner at the 38th Madrid Choreographic Competition and has since been presented at festivals including Letraheridas (Pamplona), La Sub25 (Madrid Río), and the Ibero-American Theatre Festival of La Rioja (FITLO), establishing itself as one of the most distinctive works to emerge from Spain’s contemporary queer performing arts scene.
The Clams That Speak stems from a performative investigation that places the body, and specifically “the cunt” as a symbolic space encompassing a wide diversity of bodies and genitalities, at the centre of a call to reclaim the right to live without cruelty and to challenge heteronormative assumptions surrounding sex, gender, and kinship. Drawing on references from popular culture and employing a playful, ironic tone, the piece combines contemporary dance, theatre, and audiovisual elements within an aesthetic that its creators describe as both queer camp and lesbian camp. In their own words, the work opens up “utopian escape routes” that allow audiences to imagine alternative possibilities beyond the constraints of the “Great Norm.”
Its inclusion in the festival reinforces the programme’s commitment to showcasing live performance and supporting a new generation of Spanish queer artists beyond the strictly literary sphere, highlighting the vitality and innovation of contemporary queer cultural production in Spain.
