The Beautiful Girls play Felons Barrel Room as part of Surf + Sound Festival
The Beautiful Girls is the musical project of Australian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mat McHugh. Since emerging in the early 2000s, McHugh has built a distinctive sound blending reggae, dub, folk, hip hop, soul and punk influences, shaped by a life spent around Australia’s surf and skate culture. Early releases including Morning Sun, Goodtimes and debut album Learn Yourself quickly established The Beautiful Girls as one of Australia’s most recognisable independent acts.
Over the past two decades, The Beautiful Girls have toured extensively across Australia, Japan, Europe, Brazil, Canada and the US, while albums including We’re Already Gone, Ziggurats, Spooks and Dancehall Days have expanded McHugh’s sound and international following. Entirely independent and constantly evolving, The Beautiful Girls remain defined by warm melodies, deep grooves, honest songwriting and an enduring connection to surf, travel and coastal culture

Opening Friday 5 December 2025, Felons Barrel Room will introduce a bold evolution in the brewery’s hospitality and cultural offering, blending barrel-aged beer, Vietnamese cuisine and live music in a dynamic setting. A 700-capacity cultural hub and entertainment venue, Felons Barrel Room will feature a stage, bars and seating for more than 300 diners. The walls will be lined by more than 100 French oak barrels used to age a wide variety of Felons’ beers that will be made on site.
With a world-class audio and lighting system purpose-built for live performance, the venue will host an ongoing program of live music with a focus on local and emerging talent. It will also present themed events such as trivia and movie nights, comedy shows, jazz evenings and intimate “piano bar” gigs. Featuring a sound system by internationally recognised German manufacturer d\&b audiotechnik and a dynamic lighting rig, the acoustically treated space will deliver an experience unmatched on the Northern Beaches.
